Who will be bringing home the Mann Cup this year?

August 23, 2013

The Mann Cup is back again this year with its first game happening on September 6th, 2013 (Friday). The Mann Cup serves as the Canadian Championships for Senior A Lacrosse players and matches the Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) champions against the Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) champions. The location alternates annually from west to east and is hosted by the local team. As for this year, it will be held at the MSL champions’ home and will then switch to the home of the WLA champions next year. It will be a seven game series wherein games five through seven will be scheduled in advance and played only if necessary.

Pointstreak Sports Technologies will also be supporting this event with the use of their real-time statistics software to provide up to the minute live game results for all the fans and media to follow.

With the Peterborough Lakers from the MSL winning the championship title and taking the Mann Cup last year, each of the MSL and WLA teams are definitely hungry to take back the title and the cup from the Lakers. Who will it be this year?

About the Mann Cup:

The Mann Cup was presented by the late Sir Donald Mann, builder of the Canadian Northern Railway, for the Senior Amateur Championship of Canada and was originally a challenge cup. It is a gold cup appraised at over $60,000 in 1999, and is one of the most valuable trophies in sport.

In September, 1925, when the Canadian Lacrosse Association was organized and uniform rules adopted for all competing teams, the Mann Cup was turned over to the C.L.A. by the New Westminster Club who held the trophy at that time. It was then placed into annual competition, with the series alternating from east to west.

The Mike Kelly Memorial Award - A medal presented by Gene Dopp, is given to the player selected as the most valuable to his team during each Mann Cup Series.
